Discovering Agadir Inoumar: an Amazigh treasure of Souss-Massa

What is an igoudar?

In the Amazigh tradition of southern Morocco, an "agadir" (plural "igoudar" or "iguidar") refers to a fortified collective granary , built to store harvests, foodstuffs, but also precious goods (money, jewelry, documents, etc.).
These structures also serve as shelters during periods of insecurity or drought, and symbolize communal solidarity and the collective organization of the Amazigh tribes.

Agadir Inoumar: a unique monument

  • The Agadir Inoumar is considered one of the largest and oldest igoudar in Morocco.
  • It bears witness to a remarkable Amazigh architectural and cultural heritage : walls of rammed earth or stone, roofs of argan wood or oleander, stacked individual huts, access by narrow alleys or ladders — a construction method adapted to the geographical and climatic constraints of the region.
  • Each family had a "cell" there to store their belongings: harvests, precious objects, documents, etc. The igoudar functioned almost like a collective bank or a "common fund" within the tribe.

A cultural and touristic value

Today, Agadir Inoumar (and other igoudar) represents a precious heritage of traditional Morocco — social, economic, architectural.
For visitors, it's an opportunity to discover Amazigh history, traditions, ingenuity, and community organization . A visit to Agadir Inoumar is a journey through time, a glimpse into the resilience and solidarity of bygone eras.

Unfortunately, like many igoudar in the South, several are in danger of degradation or abandonment — due to lack of resources, maintenance, or awareness.
Preserving this heritage is essential to keeping alive the historical and cultural memory of the Amazigh people.
